In 1985 Independent Sector created the “John W. Gardner Leadership Award” to recognize outstanding work on the part of nonprofit and philanthropic leaders. He would return to teach at Stanford, writing his well known book “On Leadership” in 1990. Stanford University established the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities in 2000 to honor Gardner’s life of service.

In September 2000, Gardner lent his name and support to the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities at Stanford University, a center that partners with communities to develop leadership, conduct research, and effect change to improve the lives of youth.

He would return to teach at Stanford, writing his well known book “On Leadership” in 1990. Stanford University established the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities in 2000 to honor Gardner’s life of service.
